7. Exporting

The market for U.S. goods and services in China looks more promising than it has for the past several years.  China replaced the U.S. to become the largest consumption country in the world.  China's admission to the World Trade Organization in 2001, along with China's increasing concern that the trade deficit could provoke a trade backlash from the U.S., is leading to a steady easing of import requirements by the Chinese, with American companies in a position to benefit the most.

The best products to consider for importing to China are those which are either unavailable in China, or require proprietary technology and/or manufacturing skills that cannot be found or easily duplicated in China.  China has shortages of certain raw materials that are needed to drive the export industries and these are considered priority import areas.  For example, devastating floods several years ago, and again this past summer, have led the government to ban logging in many areas and greatly expanded the market in China for imported wood.
